2010 XTREME Cup charity: water Project Finally Complete!

Aug 07 By Starfire Sports

The 2011 Starfire XTREME Cup delivered more than just great soccer. The tournament also helped raise awareness among youth soccer players about a crisis that kills more people than all forms of violence, including war. This crisis is the lack of access to clean, safe water, and it affects nearly one billion people.

Along with the soccer champions in our midst, we had youth players that were champions of this important global cause. The highest earning team, Stingrays BU15s, collected over $200 and even contributed some of their money. Together with participating teams, we were able to raise over $5,000, which was enough to build a well for an entire Malawi village and contribute to a second larger project in Ethiopia. Learn more about the projects the XTREME Cup helped make a reality.

Sounders Reserves Come Back Strong!

Jul 30 By Starfire Sports

It was a lovely evening for the Seattle Sounders Reserves to return to Starfire Stadium. They played a challenging match against the Chivas USA Reserves. The Sounders were hopeful for redemption, after a rough (3-2) loss against the Colorado Rapids Reserves last Monday. Fortunately, the Sounders put up a solid fight and were successful.

From the start of the match through the end of the first half, both teams struggled to control the possession of the ball. After much back and forth between both teams, the Chivas were able to fight off the Sounders’ defense in the 33rd minute of play and Forward #6 Jose Manuel was able to send one past the Sounders’ Keeper. In the 37th minute, Chivas’ Manuel was successful in scoring a goal off of a free kick that flew into the top right corner, just out of the Keeper’s reach. The Sounders were really starting to feel the pressure. Luckily, the Sounders’ offense did an excellent job of picking up the slack. Chivas’ Keeper #24 Patrick McLain was quick on his feet and did an excellent job of tending the goal; however, a break-away by Forward #16 David Estrada in the 43 minute resulted in an outstanding goal by Forward #22 Eriq Zavaleta. The Sounders finished the first half trailing the Chivas, with a score of 2-1.

As they entered the second half, it was apparent that the Sounders had increased their intensity and focus. Immediately, the communication was clearer and the passing game was improved. They were able to regulate the possession of the ball and make smarter plays. In the 61st minute, Sounders Midfielder #23 Servando Carrasco scored off of a penalty kick and was able to tie up the game. The Sounders continued to push hard and play smart. In the 80th minute, Zavaleta was able to score once again and help the Sounders push ahead. The final score was 3-2, Sounders.

The Sounders Reserves will return to Starfire Stadium on August 26tth at 7:00 PM to play the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Seattle Reign Triumph over Chicago Redstars, 4-1

Jul 26 By Starfire Sports

It was another beautiful Thursday evening at Starfire Stadium, as the women of the Seattle Reign were ready to encounter the women of the Chicago Red Stars. After a tough loss against FC Kansas City on July 20th, the Reign were looking to come back strong. As the fans settled down and the teams filed in, we were ready for the start of what would become a very exciting game.

There was a bit of a slow start on both ends, but eventually the Reign were able to take control. With the help of midfielder #15 Megan Rapinoe, the Reign absolutely dominated the possession of the ball for the entire game. Rapinoe was also responsible for a strong goal off of a free kick in the 6th minute of play. Following the goal by Rapinoe was an incredible play by midfielder #6 Kaylyn Kyle. In the 21st minute, Kyle scored off of a penalty kick fired into the top right corner, just out of reach for Red Stars’ keeper Erin McLeod. With all of this momentum and energy, the reign kept the upper hand and had a flawless first half.

As they returned to the field, the Reign were able to regain the control they previously had. Once again, Rapinoe took the lead and launched a fabulous shot right past McLeod in the 72nd minute. Directly following this goal was one of the twelve tremendous saves made by keeper #1 Hope Solo. Solo stopped a penalty kick in the 73rd minute and almost maintained a perfect game. Unfortunately, Chicago was able to sneak a goal past Solo, yet our Seattle Reign were able to continue to push ahead. A fourth and final goal was scored by #5 Liz Bogus in the 82nd minute. There were high fives all around, as both fans and players celebrate another strong win for the women of the Seattle Reign. The final score was 4-1, Reign.

Fans should be sure to come out and support the women in their final home game against the Portland Thorns FC on August 17th, here at Starfire Stadium. Single tickets are still available, so grab them quick!

Aggressive Game, yet Tough Loss for Sounders Reserves

Jul 22 By Starfire Sports

It was another beautiful and sunny Sunday down at the Starfire Stadium, as the Seattle Sounders Reserves prepared to faceoff against the Colorado Rapids’ Reserves. Fans of all ages began to pile in and fill up the stadium, eager to watch a great match. Following kickoff was an aggressive start on both ends, with high intensity and focus that lasted throughout the match.

The Colorado Rapids offense put some serious pressure on the Sounders defenders from the very start, allowing them to score a tough goal in the 6th minute of play. Fortunately, the Sounders were able to fight back with all they had and did an excellent job of sending some pressure right back at the Rapids defense. After three shots on goal, the Sounders were able to score in the 12th minute with a stellar goal by Forward #22, Eriq Zavaleta. Zavaleta did a great job leading the offense in the first half with numerous of shots on goal. Unfortunately the Sounders were unable to keep this momentum up, as the Rapids fought back and drove down the field, only to score in the 12th minute as well. The Rapids ultimately maintained greater possession of the ball and conquered the passing game in the first half, leading 2-1.

Forward #16, David Estrada did an absolutely magnificent job of controlling the offense and putting pressure on the Rapids’ keeper with shot after shot on target and a great assist. In the 72nd minute of play, Estrada broke away down field and assisted in a beautiful goal scored by #4, Patrick Ianni.
Despite their dominant second half, unfortunately the Sounders were unable to come out with a win. The final score of the match was Rapids 3, Sounders 2. Seattle Reign held 1-1 against Boston Breakers

Jul 04 By Starfire Sports

The weather is wonderful and the fans ready filled with excitement as Seattle Reign take on the Boston Breakers this afternoon. Seattle Reign are looking to carry the momentum forward from their last win just a few days ago. This game looks to be a promising one.

Things looked pretty even early on with both teams playing it safe opting to move the ball around and keep possession rather then push it forward. A Boston Breakers player was fouled in midfield and the ensuing free kick provided the first real chance of the game. The ball was played long into the box, on the head of an attacker who headed it well but Hope Solo parries it neatly.  In the twenty eight minutes Seattle Reign’s Megan Rapone threaded a beautiful trough ball to forward Jessica McDonald which the keeper got to first, providing the Seattle first highlight of the game. A minute later Boston went on the offensive with a shot right outside the box. Hope Sole did a good job tipping it over the top of the bar. The ensuing corner proved to be more difficult to deal with by the Seattle Reign’s defense then it should have been as they scrambled to clear the ball after much hesitation in the box.

Seattle Reign had their second chance with some good passing on the flanks and a subsequent cross. Jessica Fishlock made a good effort to get to it but was easily plucked out the air by the goalkeeper, Alyssa Naeher.  The Boston Breakers had another chance come their way in the 42nd minute off a corner. The ball was cleared hastily right back into the legs of the kicker who had another chance to swing a good ball in.  Joanna Lohman latched on to the ball for a powerful header but goalkeeper Hope Solo did equally well to parry it.  Boston had another chance denied by Hope Solo in the 45th minute off a kick inside the 6-yard box. The last piece of action from the half came from the Seattle Reign off a fast break. Jessica McDonald passed it to Fishlock in the middle. Fishlock threaded another beautiful ball splitting two defenders as McDonald continued her run forward, shooting it wide off the post.

At halftime the score tied 0-0.

DSC_0068 DSC_0108 DSC_0109 DSC_0110 DSC_0116 DSC_0159 DSC_0161DSC_0197

The second half started on a high note.  Seattle Reign made their winning intentions known with some individual dribbling and crosses into the box seemingly warning their opponent of what is to come. Seattle had a good chance in the 50th minute. Jessica Fishlock played a good pass to Megan Rapone who played an excellent trough ball down the middle back to a speedy Fshlock, narrowly shooting it wide. Finally the deadlock was broken in the 54th minute. Seattle Reign’s midfielder Christine Nairn crossed the ball into the box, which was misjudged by the defense and landed neatly to the oncoming Jessica McDonald. McDonald controlled the ball with her chest and slotted it home. 1-0 Seattle Reign.

Seattle continued to pile on the pressure and was awarded a free kick from center field as a result. Jessica McDonald received the ball, played it left to left onto a sprinting Fishlock who shot it wide as the crowd gasp in awe. In the 56th minute Boston Breaker’s Maddy Evans managed to find her self unchallenged by the top of the box and took a shot that was comfortably saved by Hope Solo. That was not to be the case in the 62nd minute however after some poor defending by Seattle in the middle of the box allowed Boston to play the ball wide. She played a low cross across the goal for an easy tap in goal. The score is tied 1-1.

Seattle had two good chances to seal the game. The first coming from Megan Rapone who took an excellent shot from a long ball that was played to her only to be saved by the heroics of the goalkeeper, Alyssa Naeher. Naeher, proved her solid self once again when she was called into action in the 62nd minute, making a fine finger tip save from a shot by Jessica McDonald which looked certain to be heading for the back of the net.

Both teams continued to press in the later stages in the game but with no real chances created. The game ended tied 1-1.

Sounders Women draw 2-2 with Colorado Rush

Jun 01 By Starfire Sports

It was an absolutely beautiful evening for soccer as the Seattle Sounders Women took on the Colorado Rush in their second game of W-League play. The Sounders were coming off of a hard fought 4-2 win against the LA Strikers. This too, would be a hard fought game.

The match was a bit slow and methodical while the teams felt each other out in the first 20 minutes. Starting in the 25th minute the game became action packed. Colorado midfielder, Jacy Drobney, scored a nice left-footed volley from about 10 yards out. Then in the 27th minute Morgan Stanton for Colorado received a perfect through ball and took it all the way into the box. At the last second she played an unselfish cut-back ball to the wide-open forward, Danica Evans, who put it away easily. You could hear the energy level drop in the crowd. But that would change soon.

The Sounders Women did not hang their heads after the two quick goals by the rush. Instead they pressured harder, and it paid off. In the 32nd minute Sounders found their first goal. Mellisa Busque whipped in a driven corner kick finding the head of Brigit Reder who powered it home at the near post.

There were a couple of opportunities for the Sounders Women to tie the match before halftime. In the 43rd minute, midfielder, Jenna Richardson, showed off some brilliant footwork to get passed two defenders and rip a nice shot, requiring an equally nice save.

The game went into halftime 2-1.

In the second half, it was all Sounders. They were dominating possession and patiently building their attacks. In the second half the sun was in the eyes of  Colorado keeper, Bethany Kanten. The Sounders used this to their advantage in hit in shots from distance. In the 76th minute the Sounders got the tying goal that they had been working for.

Defender, Janine Hinkle, hit a bomb from the far left side of the field that chipped the Kanten for the equalizer.

The last 15 minutes were very even, and in the end the score would stay even at 2-2. After going down 2-0 early in the first half, they battled hard to get back in the game. The Sounders Women have to look at this positively.

Sounders U-23 win 1-0 over Washington Crossfire

Jun 01 By Starfire Sports

Tonight the Sounders took on Washington Crossfire in their 4th PDL game. After two losses and a draw, they were eager to record their first win. And they did.

The whole match was back and forth. It was a brilliant game of soccer as both teams possessed the ball beautifully. However, the match was a defensive battle which resulted in scoring chances being few and far between. In the 4th minute Miles Byass almost put the Sounders on the board with a quick breakaway. However, the Crossfire keeper came out at the perfect time and denied Byass the goal. There were a few long range shots from both teams that zipped past the goal, but nothing to really test the goalkeepers. The first half ended 0-0.

The second half opened up and it looked much like the first half: uneventful. Crossfire had a chance to go up 1-0 when forward, Sean Klauer, found himself one on one with the Sounders’ goalkeeper, Ben Dragavon. In the end Dragavon came up with a big save to keep the game level at 0-0.

The game went into stoppage time and the crowd was tense, hoping for that miracle goal to win it for the Sounders. Midfielder, Blake Wise, would deliver that miracle goal, and in brilliant fashion too.  Josh Philips served a ball into the box and Wise trapped it with his chest and hit a bicycle kick over his head and into the top of the net. The crowd erupted. A couple minutes later the final whistle was blown and the Sounders recorded their first win of the regular season.
